It joins a favorite list and while it wont be a regular part of my rotation I definitely will smoke it when I need something different in my smoking rotation. This offers a nice contrast to the G.L. I love it! If you're noty crazy about Lat Boimbs run. C&D style; this blend smokes down to the last puff leaving a fine volcanic type ash that won't plug up the bowl. Way way too sweet for my taste buds. Sounds weird maybe, but it is a sublime experience for the latakia lover. It is very monotone and I don't notice the "other" oriental varieties at all. The initial flavors are of sweet latakia and incense like orientals. (In appraising Arangos Balkan Supreme for the first time, I remember thinking: Jeez, if this is a Lat-Bomb, then I must love me some Lat-Bomb blends). Conclusion: A very interesting and heavy blend. It burns well and forms a nice ash. I've never smoked a blend with this much Latakia and would not have, had it not been given to me. I have heard a lot about this lat bomb and I was ready to explode it in my den. If you want to get your wife out of the hose but she refuses, light up a bowl of Pirate Kake. I found this best in a small bowl as it can get kind of boring to my tastes in a large bowl. Pressed plug, quite compressed, so I'm not sure I'd call it a kake, but still not as dense and fine as a traditional English plug. The tin description says, it contains 75% (!) I suppose it depends on your mood when smoking it. This blend does it excellently! The nose of the bag is prodigiously Latakia. Surely only a real lover of Latakia! As everyone here says, its definitely a whim smoke (not your regular) and for the latkia fans. Some may be surprised to see a healthy portion of Brown Burley and Turkish, but don't be fooled because Pirate Kake is a Latakia powerhouse. Most say it reminds them of a nice woodsmoke campfire. Latakia heaven. It lacks that hint of perique spice that Nightcap has, but is darker and more smokey. I would personally recommend a little drying time for this, as it is a little too moist for my personal tastes. Tastes like a Maduro wrapped Pardon. I guess this, is in part, due to solid balance with the orientals and burley. As my sample was small and I liked it, but yet was not blown away by it, I am giving this one three stars with plans to pick up a tin or two to try later. If you're a pipe enthusiast looking for a show to listen to on the go or while you're kicking back enjoying a bowl, this is definitely the place for you. It has a similar effect of a good Sichuan pepper, a bit of a tingling sensation on the palate. This burned cool, slow and very consistently and needed very little re-lighting. It also is not much of a crowd- pleaser in terms of room note. Without risk of being accused of hyperbole, I can categorically say that, if I were forced to only smoke Pirate Kake for the rest of my life, I'd be absolutely fine with that. Tonight, it is C&D's Pirate Kake. This is a superb blend of all those who experienced latakian mixtures. Wow, holding in the hands a brick of this extremely dark brown-black blend (no light-colored bits in it!) of exceptional Latakia accompanied by Turkish and Burley. Occasional notes of dark baker's chocolate, hickory, and brine. Really three-dimensional. While it does lack depth, the appeal of the hea vy lat is enough for lat heads. Mouthfeel seems a bit more mellow or creamier if you will, while I find less of a spicy tongue bight. It was better when I broke up the beautifully blended cake and dried it overnight. It isn't a very sophisticated, subtle or multidimensional tobacco, and it isn't suited for all-day consumption (in spite of the relatively low nicotine content). In the smoke the Latakia - even though being 75% percent of the blend - really smooth and silky. The focus here is Latakia- pungent, peaty, slightly briny Latakia. At other times, you may also detect an almost perfumy fragrance, possibly a synaesthetic hallucination. The strength like the body falls short of medium. The smokey latakia is up front (though I wouldn't consider it a lat bomb), and floral riding shot gun and mildly sweet in the back. This is one of the very best tobacco I have ever smoked. A couple weeks later when I could imagine wanting Latakia again, I put some nice Squadron Leader in the pipe and smoked it down 1/4 way, until the shank cracked 1/2 down from the bowl.
